boo~
finished reading jodi picoult's nineteen minutes two nights ago.. felt quite depressed after reading.. [hmmmm. using the word "depressed" reminds me of my first lect of semester two. during EL1101E tdy, the lecturer was talking about different new technical jargon different mods may introduce to the students.. for example, from EL1101E we learn the true meaning of "grammar", as such that everybody who speaks a certain language will hv an innate knowledge of that language's grammar so there is no such thing as "poor grammar" (or something along that lines). anw she said that she used to tell her best friend who majored in psychology that she felt depressed. her friend would go nono, you are not depressed, you are not depressed as in clinically depressed etcetcetc. OKAY. but that wasn't my point. =X]
anw yaa. after putting down the book, i just had this bleak feeling coming over me.
summary of the storyline:
The main male character, seventeen-year-old Peter Houghton was a victim of bullying since kindergarten and the bullying ranged from taunting to physical exchanges like being shoved into a locker. He was targeted simply because he was different from the other kids, and he just could not fit in anywhere in school. Peter used to have one best friend, Josie Cormier, but their friendship came to an abrupt end somewhere in the middle of high school as Josie wanted to fit into the popular crowd. One day, Peter went to school with four guns and tow and started shooting. He killed ten people (including Josie's boyfriend) and injured many. He got arrested. The story went on to alternate between recounting the past (e.g. what had happened years ago, months before, days before, hours before) and narrating the present (e.g. the trials, how life went on for various people after the shooting). Finally there was a slight twist at the end which I hadn't seen it coming. Go read the book if you want to know how it ended:).
had been thinking. just so how different peter was from the other kids/teenagers. and how the difference led to the incessant daily bullying which eventually climaxed into the breakdown of the bully victim and the drastic revenge taken. sighh. but it was quite saddening to realise that you could not point fingers at one party alone, be it peter's parents, peter's brother, the bullies, peter himself, josie etc, cos everyone had a part in contributing to the ultimate outcome.

also read the Northern Lights. the first of His Dark Materials trilogy. the Northern Lights was filmed as the Golden Compass (which I didn't watch). the story just got more and more riveting and thrilling as i read on:). one part that grossed me out was the fight between two polar bears, for the King's (i.e ruler of Svalbard- the region of the polar bears) throne. the polar bear who won (Iorek Byrnison) ripped open the loser's chest and ate his (its?) heart.
=S.
stomach felt abit queasy after reading that part.
lol. i wonder how it was filmed. or maybe that bit got cut away in the movie.
but then again, it would all be computer graphics if the gory scene had been filmed.
other than that gross bit, the book was great. and sis just lent me book two and three. HOHO.
but school has started. *groans*

so those were two books that left rather long lasting impression(s?) is there a plural form for impression?- on me.. that's why i prefer trashy novels sometimes. ahha. trashy novels that just provide pure entertainment and once you finish the last page, that's it. no overarching after effects. the shopaholic series is one example. hehe. shopaholic series is trashy yes, but really extremely entertaining. i'm always surprised and amazed by becky bloomwood's shopping prowess, letter writing hobby (mainly written to her bank managers regarding overdrafts or investments) and overactive imagination=p.
dean koontz's books fall under the category of bone-chilling thrillers. everytime i finish a koontz book, i will tell myself i would stop borrowing his books, which never fail to creep me out. but the nxt time i step into a library and not find an interesting trashy romance novel, i will borrow another koontz book. bleargh. also because i don't know many authors. heheh.
