A LIFE WELL LIVED
When an old lady died in the geriatric ward of a small hospital near Dundee, Scotland, it was believed that she had nothing left of any value.
Later, when the nurses were going through her meager possessions, they found this poem. Its quality and content so impressed the staff that copies were made and distributed to every nurse in the hospital. One nurse took her copy to Ireland. The old lady’s sole bequest to posterity has since appeared in the Christmas edition of the News Magazine of the North Ireland Association for Mental Health.
And now this little old Scottish lady, with seemingly nothing left to give to the world, is the author of this simple, yet eloquent, poem that is traveling the world by Internet. Goes to show that we all leave "SOME footprints in time".....
A Crabby Old Woman
What do you see, nurses ….. What do you see?
What are you thinking ….. When you’re looking at me?
A crabby old woman ….. Not very wise?
Uncertain of habit ….. With faraway eyes?
Who dribbles her food ….. And makes no reply,
When you say in a loud voice ….. “I do wish you’d try!”
Who seems not to notice ….. The things that you do,
And forever is losing ….. A stocking or shoe?
Who, resisting or not ….. Lets you do as you will,
With bathing and feeding ….. The long day to fill?
Is that what you’re thinking?? ….. Is that what you see??
Then open your eyes, nurse ….. You’re not looking at me.
I’ll tell you who I am ….. As I sit here so still,
As I do at your bidding ….. As I eat at your will.
I’m a small child of ten ….. With a father and mother,
Brothers and sisters ….. Who love one another.
A young girl of sixteen ….. With wings on her feet
Dreaming that soon now ….. A lover she’ll meet.
A bride soon at twenty ….. My heart gives a leap,
Remembering the vows ….. That I promised to keep.
At twenty-five now ….. I have young of my own,
Who need me to guide ….. And a secure happy home.
A woman of thirty ….. My young now grown fast,
Bound to each other ….. With ties that should last.
At forty, my young sons ….. Have grown and are gone,
But my man’s beside me …..To see I don’t mourn
At fifty once more ….. Babies play round my knee,
Again we know children ….. My loved one and me.
Dark days are upon me ….. My husband is dead,
I look at the future ….. I shudder with dread.
For my young are all rearing …..Young of their own ,
And I think of the years ….. And the love that I’ve known.
I’m now an old woman ….. And nature is cruel;
Tis jest to make old age ….. Look like a fool.
The body, it crumbles ….. Grace and vigor depart,
There is now a stone ….. Where I once had a heart.
But inside this old carcass ….. A young girl still dwells,
And now and again ….. My battered heart swells.
I remember the joys ….. I remember the pain,
And I’m loving and living ….. Life over again.
I think of the years ….. All too few, gone too fast,
And accept the stark fact ….. That nothing can last.
So open your eyes, people ….. Open and see,
Not a crabby old woman ….. Look closer …. see, ME!!
Remember this poem when you next meet an older person whom you might unthinkingly brush aside without remembering that there's young soul that still lives within them ... for we will all, one day, be there, too!

TWELVE weird things about mE:
saw this on yixiu (jaslyn)'s blog and decided to do although i wasn't tagged:).
1) I obsess about losing valuables like wallet/handphone. So I'll constantly check my bag for them and go into a frenzy when I think I can't find it instantly when it's only hidden in some dark corner of my huge bag.
2) I cannot stand nail polish. I think it smells and I don't like having a coat of on my finger(or toe)nails. Plus I'll hate it if it's get chipped so it's very impractical. I hate blue and red toenails especially. I used to dislike seeing people sporting colourful nails, but nail-art is fine. Nail-arts are pretty. But I still won't go for manicures specially to put some flowers or frills on my nails.
3) I can be slightly paedophilic. But I've seen the true colours of kids to be overly excited about their supposed cuteness.
4) I sometimes go to bed without brushing my teeth. o.O
5) I drool on my poor pillow in my sleep too.
6) I get stressed when I play more intellectual games with my nephew. He is six this year. He can be slightly bossy while playing games. I remember playing a simple game of dum (or whatever the name is.. the chess game thereby your pieces can only move fwd diagonally and become king when you step into opponents territories) and getting stressed out by him. He knows how to play English chess, Chinese chess, Go (圍棋). He is learning japanese now with his father's old textbooks. He knows how to draw (almost) all the countries' national flags. He likes to ask all kinds of questions and demands detailed explanations.
7) I once aspired to be a forensic pathologist. *imagine. opening up dead bodies...*
8) I talk to inanimate objects. Just yesterday, I was cursing at my comp in colorful language.
9) All my soft toys have names. My siblings used to create birth certs for some of their toys. So I guess I'm not the only weird one.
10) I like stupid cartoon characters. Examples are Sylvester the cat (who never fails to get tricked by the irritating Tweety Bird), Spongebob (who does retarded things) and Patrick (who does even more retarded things and is stupider than the yellow sponge).
11) I like watching weepy dramas. I can get overly emotional over certain scenes or lines uttered by the characters. The weird thing is I really relish in emptying buckets of tears.
12) I like to shop in supermarkets sometimes. Looking at the wide range of cookies, chips, chocolates, sweets, tidbits, snacks can be a therapeutic experience for me. Guess this habit was cultivated frm the mugging days whereby life was nothing but WORDS and NUMBERS.
13) (not applicable) I used to think I have a weird brother who likes to irritate me for no good reason. He always says, "I just like to irritate you. For fun." (something along these lines, i've a very bad memory). But ytd ie 1st May I learnt from vann that her friend's brother is exactly like mine. Holy cow!

anyone reading pls do as well:). (if you are as bored as i am)

hv been feeling tired these 2 days. as usual, it was for no good reason. especially for today. maybe it's just the lethargy bug going around. or the rainy and thundery weather. had the i'm-falling-sick feeling ytd. had a headache tdy. pfft. darned. forgot to sound out my boss abt tkg leave in 2nd week of june. dear friends, will you be interested in a part-time job frm 2-7pm in tamp st41, to be incharge of a bunch of lovely kids fr 5 short days? haa. i may be flying to hk in june! see if my sis can grab the airtics. apparently cathaypacific has this offer of 4 airtickets fr the price of 3.
why aren't i sounding more enthusiastic than i shld for this chance to go OVERSEAS? hk somemore.
okkay. i shld drop the i'm-feeling-oh-so-weak-and-sorry-for-myself act. i'm getting OLD. flared up ytd cos the boys and gurls were hving their old
clichéd fights. couldn't stand their quarrelsome going-ons so i told them to shutup politely. then came the bit that i hate and always happens. they disregarded my words. so i raised my voice and gave them a piece of my mind. that invited my boss into the room.
hurray. tdy, for no reason, they began to ostracise mrlim. there were pushes and scuffles and mrseetoh's push sent mrlim towards the rack of clothes hangers and towels. hallelujah. i knew the push wasn't intended to be harsh but it looked really bad. then again mrlim is known fr his exaggerated antics. wells.
whatever. just don't
kill yourselves. my godson forged his mother's signature fr spelling!! but after sounding him out, thereby he didn't attempt to cover or hide his mistake, and his tears flowed down (he's quite a crybaby), we realised the reason behind was he'd forgotten to let his mother sign, rather than cos he scored badly.
i'm still feeling tired.
was craving for chocs ytd night.
cld it be possible withdrawal symptons of lack of prisonbreak ytd?
jaaa.

had this really odd dream ytd/today morning. people concerned were sh and yun. places were siglap cc, dhs canteen(tanjong rhu campus) and tj library. it was really bizarre. dreams seldom make much sense. haha. first scene was sh dragging us to a SINGING class in siglap cc in the morning. then i left them to go somewhere else. next thing i remember was looking for seats to mug in the tj library. but as usual the lib was filled with people and there was no space. so i went downstairs, and arrived at the dhs canteen. in the dhs canteen, i was wearing my dhs uniform. went to the yongtaufoo stall to buy the fried wantons for the 3 of us. and suddenly i was running late for the korean class. so i ran from the 158 bus stop to the 30 bus stop. as i ran past the 30 bus stop i saw the siglap cc looming ahead. lol. the dream really doesn't make sense. and i feel angry. i didn't eat the wanton in my dreams!!! sigh. this never fails to happen. i will dream of eating something but will wake before i sink my teeth into the food. x)
anyway i guess this dream started cos sh was remindin me about the korean cls tmr. YES. i must go learn how to write all those korean letters later. hee:). brain is rusty. hoho. my students were asking me what do i do when i go home. cos i don't play computer games or watch tv, they couldn't imagine how i pass my time. actually i do watch the homecoming sometimes, but i don't want to discuss the drama with them, so i brush their qn off with "i don't watch." but sometimes the show gets unbearable to watch. haa. but thinkin about it, i must hv a boring life in their eyes. reach home, eat tv dinner, bathe, watch some foodie shows on tv, read books/mags or go online, sleep at 12plusplus. haha. nvm. i'm workin towards enriching my life a
little more. look, i've signed up for korean cls! ahah. and i'm giving tuition on sunday mornings. and i watch meaningful tv programmes (ie the rising of great nations! which by the way is a reaally interesting show). i read newspapers
once in a while. i've
started to go jogging. hur. i think the point is, that i am able to list out all these things, shows that in actual fact, i'm not doing much to enrich my life. lol. but whatever. i am doing
something. haaa.
i rcved acceptance letter from ntu fr the chinese course. relieved. hmmm. waiting for nus's before i decide.
YAAY. i only just realised labour day is coming. ole=). FLY KITE. can we arrange to go sing K that day too?? hahaha. i miss having fun with my friends. AHHH. ky reminded me we are supposed to play monopoly. hehe. do we sound like a weird group of people? hahahha. i don't care la:). we must still find a day to K.

hey.
lately i've really become abit too much of a softie. ahah. wondering what's the cause. let me think. maybe it started with having to deal with only one or two p5s in my room, when the p6s were busy with remedial/supplementary and other p5s at cca/camps. so naturally with fewer students, i need not put on such a black face as not much trouble can be stirred. visiting the other room also contributes to my softie side. cos ms kok (my centre's staff's recognised dear) is v adorable. my godson is cute as usual. mr fong is a crazy monkey (hmm this reminds me of "stupid yellow monkey" cos ytd afternoon was suddenly high abt hana w yt) but is still v cute cos, yes i admit i'm shallow, he has a cute high voice and rosy cheeks. and his antics are funny. on a sidenote, lately he's gettin worse. he likes to disturb people and claim that the original victims are the ones who started the whole thing and
bullied him. today, he squashed himself into this shelf and when he wriggled out the board of the shelf nearly fell off and hit his head. when scolded he claimed another boy pushed him in. ~_~. mr lim junior (he and his elder brother are poles apart) likes to disturb me, along with mr chong, but he's still pretty guai. i hv a soft spot fr all these kids and plus my colleague is nice and motherly. so i indulged in the softie side of me in this room. lol. and shit my colleague bought spongebob stickers fr me when i admitted my liking fr it. haha. oops. i mean, yes, i can connect well with the kids, but i don't want to seem like an overgrown kid or their "同黨". ahhaha.
interacting with these kids is a fun process ba. tiring as well. and made me realise a number of things. kids really show how humans behave in actual fact. the true side of people which adults try to hide or subdue/tone down.
1) 人善被人欺 is a fine example. whether or not you are person to be trifled with, the kids can judge correctly, at most within a week.
2) they are also a forgetful lot. if you do them a good turn, they will accept it happily and in no time they will forget about it. although enid blyton stories never fail to teach us values and morals like "one good turn deserves another", i doubt children nowadays read much enid blyton or take these stories seriously (or just go "aiyah lame~") like mr lee, always seem to be in a hurry to grow up, wanting to act and behave like an adult
though not making much headway. ya, so they will forget about the good turn and not appreciate help that is rendered, but soon take it for granted.
3) they also seldom understand the meaning of 適可而止, and will more than often 得寸進尺. few will be the 自動 type, who will understand their limits, and not try to test limits or trample over the limits. examples are the giving out of sweets/stickers/snacks; or their volumes, their playfulness and my tolerance.
4) they tend to be easily influenced and led on. ya so the p5s will be so called led astray by the p6s and they will learn bad habits from one another. swearing, obsession in cards (duel masters) and online games, bad behaviour, heck-care attitude, stupid songs, denying wrongdoings, pettiness, badmouthing people etc. there's one 'game' that i abhor. usually conducted by the p6s. a p6 asks "who wants this sweet, jump and catch it!" and the rest will make a beeline for it.
goodness. my dear boys. it's just one sweet. must you go to such extents fr it? but of course i think more and oft it's due to playfulness and not the sweet itself being a push factor fr them. or stupid games like "collect x sweet wrappers and trade for 2 more sweets."
but still, kids are still more pristine pages to a book, and so they can be taught to face certain matters with the correct attitude. it's not really up to us teachers/care-givers to mould and knead them. i believe that parents play the utmost crucial role. true enough they may spend more time in school and daycare, but if they refuse to listen or to learn as they don't have the basic right attitude, there's nothing we can do.
mmmhmmm.
yupp. i will harden and stop presenting myself as the easily bullied and tken advantage of the poor mslim. =X
i am tough goods.
haa. *有些心虛。*
actually i've been handling them rather well ba. just reverted back to
softiness these few weeks. stop playing the sympathetic role, gurl. stop being the good guy. be the meanie that may be unreasonable at times, but able to maintain order.
hai.

did the color profile thing. it was labelled as thus:
Your (my) Personal Profile (yes, in greeeen)You are longing for some love and affection at this time - not that you have been deprived of tender loving care - but there are times when everyone needs to try something new or to go 'somewhere' else to perhaps experience that little extra 'understanding'.
For some time now you may have been subjected to considerable physical illness and or emotional distress. This may have taken a severe toll and you feel both physically and mentally worn out. Your self esteem has been reduced and you now need a peaceful environment which will permit you to effect full recovery.
You feel truly deprived - not getting your fair share, but you have accepted the fact that that is the way things are at this time and that it is prudent to let matters slide and not hit your head against the wall -so conform and agree for a while. Accept the situation - nothing can last forever.
All of the stress and strains resulting from disappointment have led to agitation and anxiety. You have been going out of your way to make a good impression, but you have reservations as to the likelihood of succeeding. You feel that you have a right to accomplish all that you set your mind on but you have become helpless and distressed when circumstances have gone against you. The idea of failure is most upsetting and this can even mean utter dejection. You see yourself as a scapegoat and you feel everyone in your sphere of influence has tried to take undue advantage of you. You are trying to convince yourself that your failure to achieve standing and recognition is not of your making but indeed of those around you.
Sometimes one fears that its not worth formulating new ideas and projects because whatever you seem to have done in the past has never worked out and you are tired of, as they say, banging your head against a brick wall. No one seems to care. So now you are trying to get away from it all by withdrawing into a 'fantasy land' but unfortunately 'fantasy land' is just that and sooner or later you will have to return to reality so why delay the inevitable? When you do return, you will find that the situation is not as tough as perhaps you thought it was.
*
hmm. certain bits are true ba. when i selected the first cube i wasn't really paying much attention cos was sms-ing. after i selected the violet, i saw the line supposed to choose according to preference. chose yellow last cos the yellow looked sucky. hahaha. erm. i don't think i've suffered serious emotional distress (unless you count the great desire to strangle the monsters at times) or considerable physical illness (unless you count disgusting cramps of the month) ba.
*
on another note, ntu biz school, why are you so efficient?? you're making me feel insecure. *shivers* haha. it's okaaay.

korean class was interesting:). ne, it's fun to learn it with friends. haha. a, ya, o, yo, oe, yoe, u, yu, eu, i. heheh. yaay. looking forward to more lessons and learning more!
my right eye is itching again. sucks. i hv this incredible urge to pull it out and give it a good scratch. sounds happy tree friends-ish eh. sigh.
i'd been thinking that i've bonded quite well with the bunch of them in my room. been wondering what kind of relationship do i share with them? teacher-student relationship doesn't seem right. we're definitely not on equal status, but yet i'm not so-called as high up as a teacher figure stands in their minds. for one thing, they don't really fear me. i hv the authority to keep them in order altho they may not always listen (half of the time they don't). i help solve their questions when they are in doubt.
===
above was typed on thurs. thoughts that go nowhere always surface when i hv too much time on my hands. haha. i suppose, i really don't mind being the normal me with the kids. the non-assertive sort. i just hope that i'll be able to teach them some things throughout these few months. academic wise i might not be able to help them that much, cos it's mostly up to them to learn and gain knowledge. but whatever is within my means, i try to mk them learn, or pick up some unorthodox but yet still useful skills during exams. values and lessons in life will be even harder, as i'm not much wiser than they are with the small age gap, but i hope i can still teach them to be more giving and less aggressive. sighh. HOPE la. in huge caps. i really hope something good will come out these five or six months. i generally see good in most people, so i hope to keep up with this notion in mind after leaving the centre. which i believe i can ba. they aren't bad kids. but there are certain habits that i really detest. Pointing fingers, answering back with excuses to push all blame from themselves, being defensive, badmouthing people, pettiness. maybe showing blatant dislike is a form of forthrightness. granted you may hv something against this person as he or she did something to incur your wrath. but i don't see why there is a need to gang up with a few of your friends to ostracize that person. seeing behaviour like that really mks me wonder. are these 11 and 12-yr olds? i certainly hope that it is just childish antics and something that they will grow out of it and not the kind of attitude they will grow up with. maybe i'm just exaggerating or reading too much between the lines. maybe it's a stage we all go through as children. or children nowadays all are premature babies. mmm. maybe i am too narrow minded, or hv this Utopian thinking. that all children should stay pure and hv that right dosage of childish innocence in them.
it's okay. i do still see the innocence here and there, now and then at the centre.
but some bad habits had got rubbed off my dearest godson. he has become less angelic. haa. sincerely hope the dears will not grow up and evolve into monsters:).
meanwhile, dear monsters, please mk my stay here in your territories a more pleasant one with more good memories than bad:).
and meanwhile, dear yc, don't contemplate too much. and live up to your forgetfulness. and... see the good in them, but don't get too carried away and put too many wings on their backs. keep in mind that there are still some lines that cannot be crossed.
heh.

BOO.
here's a quick update of my life. spent a GOOD friday last friday. that's an understatement. it was a fabulous friday=). yaay. GYA rocks. hahahaha. alright alright. i shall stop laughing in that hyena way- ie hahahaha. anyway last thursday was a pleasant day too. boys weren't too rowdy (but that's almost a week ago's events so my memory is in a blur), and i had a great laugh towards end of the shift that day. it was just one of those at-the-moment-really-funny but when you think about it again it's nothing much kind of joke. it involved 3 of my students. wells.. but the laughing did me good. i haven't laughed in that manner for a loong time.
one part i remembered:
ms tan: (sings) my hum my hum my hum (or whatever the spelling was supposed to be)
me: ohhh please. i told you before i hate that song.ms tan: (feigns ignorance) my hum my hum~
ms leong: what hump? you camel ah..
(cue: laughter)
(ms leong makes a camel-like face.)(cue: my uncontrollable laughter)ahh yes. it was really
dumb. =.=
and i always feel like smacking people when the boys start to sing "smack that, on the floor etcetcetc" i reallly cannot stand that song.
IT SUCKS.
oops. heeck. that song makes me feel like cursing. haha.
oops.anyway, back to the GOOD friday. the following are the items yt and i gave eve when we tried to play fairygodmother to fulfil her birthday wishes.

first was a snippet of the full score, and that was the stave with the main point. we let eve "find her forte" literally. second was the blusher she had pined for (thereby she almost bought the real thing at watsons but luckily her attention was diverted by the mascara and eyeshadow). third was her "confidence" which was found in box after box.
the boxes are my proud creation. haha=). personal favourite was the third box. cos of the material and the artistic thread which looked like shit when it came out cos it was really squashed.

I SPENT 97bucks on

taught tuition on sunday at eduStation bedok branch. it was a p2 girl, for english and math. took her sometime to warm up and open up, to progress from ant-like murmurs to talking in normal volumes. i like teaching younger kids. fuun.
went to the bookfair @ expo in the evening. the 12 i boarded broke down halfway. luckily it broke down at the stop i was meetin sh. that's the 2nd time i've experienced a bus breakdown, with the same bus service!! the other time this happened was on my way home from dhs, when the 12 suddenly broke down after two stops. anw there were sooo many books at the fair. the only familiar author i managed to see was maeve binchy. bought 5 books at $21.:D
*
met up with the gurls on tues. had ROSTI! and 4 types of glorious desserts at the Big O at wheelock. yuums. one was a durian dessert with chocolate coated over it. the durian was seriously good. it really felt like i was floating in heaven. it was really purely durian. one was a mudpie which was called the Dark Side. very very chocolatey. another was a traditional cheesecake. it was very richh. the last one was baileys' cheesecake but didn't really taste the baileys. i love desssserts.

sun yanzi's newest album is really worth listening=). 很耐聽。每聽一次都有不同的感觸。don't sue me for this, but it's soo much nicer than 《完美的1天》.
bought a book last week. was sooo excited about the purchase=). saw the newest shopaholic book (shopaholic and baby!!!! ohhmy.) in mph last sunday in raffles city, and was planning to buy it in popular cos thought it might be cheaper somehow. but popular has not started selling it! arghh. so decided to buy a jodi picoult book. thought for a long time before deciding on salem falls. it was the right decision. it was a really good book. i'm going to read it over again and try to see if i can answer the questions at the back. ahah. some discussion qns sort of thing. it was a thought provoking kind of a book. and it can really stir up feelings in the reader. maybe i'm too emo=b.
i want my birthday to be here again. i want more of her books! vanshing acts, the tenth circle, my sister's keeper, the pact. haa haa. not very long till my last teen birthday.
SIX MONTHS and a week.
harry potter and the deathly hallows will be released on 21st july!
need i say more?
i simply cannot
wait=DD.
*
i have to make some positive changes to my current lifestyle. sleep earlier, wake earlier. stop rotting and update myself about what's happening around the world. reading materials do not stop at magazines. the exercising bit is more difficult to arrange.. i don't want to run alone.. i don't really fancy the idea of waking early to go jog. cannot possibly jog after work. weekends? won't be regular. hmmm. walking to work isn't much exercise actually. if i walk fast, it takes only 15minutes?
i should take up some classes to enrich my life a little eh? people take driving lessons, dancing classes, but i'm interested in neither. cooking classes? err. sh was telling me yun's ma made her go for some cooking classes at the cc. haha. i want to eat the suan pan zi you learnt how to make o, my dear cloudy~ heheh. yoga classes? i stopped last year. i was never very enthu about it anyhow. had wanted to learn drums and korean. but music classes aren't very easy to find ba? yamaha will be too ex. cc de.. i dunno. never went to check it out. will prefer to have company for the lessons also. xh did ask me if i wanted to go fr jap lessons, but i would prefer learning korean! mmms. there was once i wanted to learn flower arrangement too.. library may have books on it.. i want to learn how to make nice icing patterns too:). to decorate the cakes.
i want to bake more cakes. learn cheesecake and brownies. then try making the icing. icing is normally placed on sponge cakes? mm. i want to decorate shoes too. spotlight!! or can any kind soul tell me what kind of marker or paint is suitable for drawing on shoes? heh. i want to draw, doodle more often too. create more animals. ahah. was trying to draw a panda ytd. when i'm finally satisfied will put it up..

application ended ytd.
still unsure about my future. wells.
