i have so many readings to complete and my very considerate hy2229/ssa2204 tutor posted this:
"Malaysia just celebrated its 50th birthday yesterday (Aug 31) and Singapore its 42nd on Aug 9. But Singapore was ‘expelled’ only after less than two years in Malaysia. So shouldn’t Malaysia be only 44 years old based on Singapore’s Malaysian experience? To solve this puzzle, read Janadas Devan’s article on p.17 of yesterday’s Straits Times (31 Aug). Read also Terence Chong’s take on Malay nationalism (p. 33) in the same issue. Janadas had claimed that UMNO had triumphed by insisting on Malay, as opposed to Malayan nationalism, which ironically, was an article of faith even among many Singaporeans way back in 1945 after Singapore’s exclusion from the Federation of Malaya. So when did Singapore nationalism ever emerge?
In fact, it is worth spending the weekend reading The Straits Times’ special report on Malaysia (1 Sep issue, p. S1-S8) and also other articles on Malaysia’s 50th Merdeka Day in yesterday’s issue (p. 16-18, 33) as our history is so intertwined with Malaysia’s. Their Trade Minister Rafidah Aziz had recently coined a new word to describe our relationship after the cutting of the umbilical cord: a “navel-to-navel” relationship, no more “abang-adek”. "
like wth.
she also said this:
"Dear students
