"Malaysia just celebrated its 50th birthday yesterday (Aug 31) and Singapore its 42nd on Aug 9. But Singapore was ‘expelled’ only after less than two years in Malaysia. In fact, it is worth spending the weekend reading The Straits Times’ special report on Malaysia (1 Sep issue, p. S1-S8) and also other articles on Malaysia’s 50th Merdeka Day in yesterday’s issue (p. 16-18, 33) as our history is so intertwined with Malaysia’s. Their Trade Minister Rafidah Aziz had recently coined a new word to describe our relationship after the cutting of the umbilical cord: a “navel-to-navel” relationship, no more “abang-adek”. "
